Our Journey

From a Zozo Hut to a Structured Community

A 30-year journey of persistence, partnership, and purpose — built one skill at a time.

1988

Humble Beginnings

Phuthanang began in a zozo hut in Tsakane, Ekurhuleni — a small but determined start driven by the belief that persons with disabilities deserve dignity and opportunity.

1990s

Department of Labour Partnership

The Department of Labour recognised the workshop's impact and funded the construction of a purpose-built facility, including a kitchen, workshop floor, admin office, hall, and ABET classroom.

2000s

Programme Expansion

Skills development programmes deepened, with structured ABET education enabling beneficiaries to achieve formal qualifications alongside practical vocational training.

Today

30+ Years of Impact

Phuthanang continues to serve 200+ beneficiaries annually, standing as one of South Africa's most established protective workshops and a model for disability-inclusive economic participation.

Why It Matters

"Persons with disabilities comprise 15% of South Africa's population, yet only 1.3% of the formal workforce."

Phuthanang exists to close this gap — providing structured pathways to economic participation, income, and dignity for those most marginalised.

Voices from Our Community

Beneficiary
Before I came to Phuthanang, I stayed at home and felt invisible. Now I have skills, I earn money from what I make, and I come here every day with purpose. This workshop gave me back my dignity.

My son has been at Phuthanang for four years. The change in him is remarkable — he is confident, he has friends, he contributes to our household. As a parent, I cannot put a price on what this organisation has done for our family.
