What We Stand For
Three core values have guided Phuthanang since 1988 — and they guide every decision we make today.
Dignity First
Every person who walks through our doors is treated with unconditional respect. We believe disability is a human rights issue — not a welfare problem — and structure everything around affirming the inherent worth of each individual.

Years of dignified service
Skills for Life
Practical vocational training in woodworking, sewing, crafts, and assembly gives beneficiaries real, marketable abilities. We don't just teach skills — we build pathways to economic independence and lasting self-sufficiency.

Community Rooted
Phuthanang was born from the community of Tsakane and exists to serve it. We work alongside families, social workers, government departments, and local organisations to build a web of support around every beneficiary.

The Journey, Chapter by Chapter
A Zozo Hut and a Dream
Phuthanang Protective Workshop was established in a zozo hut in Tsakane, Ekurhuleni. A small group of dedicated community members and disability advocates came together with a singular belief: that persons with disabilities deserved more than charity — they deserved opportunity.

Government Recognition
The Department of Labour took notice of Phuthanang's growing impact and funded the construction of a purpose-built facility. The new building included a fully equipped workshop floor, a kitchen, an administration office, a community hall, and a dedicated ABET classroom — transforming the workshop's capacity to serve.

Deepening Programmes
With stable infrastructure in place, Phuthanang expanded its programme offerings. The ABET classroom became a formal adult education centre. Vocational training diversified across multiple trade areas. Beneficiaries began earning supplementary income through the sale of workshop products — a tangible demonstration of economic participation.

A Model for Inclusive Development
More than 30 years on, Phuthanang stands as one of South Africa's most established protective workshops. With over 200 beneficiaries served annually and a track record of accountability, the organisation is recognised as a model for disability-inclusive economic participation — and as a compelling case for sustained funding.

A Purpose-Built Accessible Home
Built with support from the Department of Labour — every space designed for accessibility, dignity, and productive activity.
Workshop Floor
The heart of the operation — a fully equipped, accessible workshop where beneficiaries develop vocational skills and produce goods for sale.
